A Timber Alternative?

This week’s decision for our new build was to choose a material for our front porch.

We decided that a decking timber that will eventually turn a weathered grey would be best. My first step was to check out some Pinterest images for inspiration.

There is something relaxed and warm about a timber deck.

They have a natural charm with each timber species having its own distinctive colour and grain.

I particularly love the look of timber as it weathers and softens in colour.

After heading to the local timber store to check out the options, I came across a timber alternative called Modwood. This product is made from a mix of wood waste and recycled plastic milk bottles. It initially caught my attention; Modwood looks remarkably like timber and is suitable for decks under cover, it does not splinter and comes in a range of thicknesses. I love that I can achieve a weathered grey look immediately with the Silver Gum colour.

Modwood was ticking all the boxes as a long-lasting timber alternative. However there is a down side (isn’t there always?!). Our front porch faces west and will receive the strong afternoon sun. How will an artificial material look in a few years after some fading?  After weighing up all the pros and cons between timber and Modwood, we have made a decision. There is no denying that a timber decking will age gracefully (hopefully its owners will follow suit!).
